Email & Marketing FAQ
Common questions about sending emails, managing subscriptions, and email best practices.
Unsubscribe Links
Q: How do I set up unsubscribe links in emails?
A: You don't need to set anything up. Unsubscribe links are automatically included in all marketing emails sent through Zipper.
What's automatic:
- Every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link in the footer
- Unsubscribe links comply with CAN-SPAM and GDPR regulations
- Tracking pixels for open rates are also automatic
- No configuration required
What you should never do:
- Don't remove the email footer (it contains the unsubscribe link)
- Don't manually add unsubscribe links (they won't work)
For more details, see: How Email Unsubscribe Links Work
Q: There isn't an unsubscribe link on my test email. Is something broken?
A: No, this is intentional. Test emails omit unsubscribe links and tracking pixels by design.
Why test emails are different:
- No recipient record exists (you're not in your own contact list when testing)
- No subscription to manage or track
- Tracking pixels would give inaccurate open rate data
- Test emails are meant to preview content and formatting only
Real emails include:
- Unsubscribe link in footer
- Tracking pixel for opens
- All required compliance elements
How to test:
If you want to see what real recipients see:
- Add yourself as a contact in your CRM
- Add yourself to the contact list
- Send the real campaign (not a test)
- Check your inbox for the full email with unsubscribe link
Q: What happens when someone unsubscribes?
A: When a recipient clicks the unsubscribe link:
- They're taken to an unsubscribe confirmation page
- Their email preferences are updated across all contact lists
- They're marked as "unsubscribed" in your CRM
- They stop receiving marketing emails immediately
Important notes:
- Unsubscribed contacts remain in your CRM (not deleted)
- They can still receive transactional emails (receipts, confirmations, etc.)
- They can re-subscribe through the customer app if they change their mind
- You cannot manually re-subscribe them without their consent
Q: Where do I see who has unsubscribed?
A: Go to CRM and filter by subscription status:
- Click CRM in the main menu
- Use the filter dropdown
- Select Email subscription status > Unsubscribed
- View the list of unsubscribed contacts
Test Emails
Q: Why do my test emails look different from the real ones?
A: Test emails intentionally omit:
- Unsubscribe links
- Tracking pixels
- Personalization for non-existent recipients
- Any dynamic content that requires a real recipient
What test emails do show:
- Email layout and formatting
- Static content and images
- General template design
- Logo and branding
Use test emails for layout review only, not for testing functionality.
Q: How do I send a test email?
A: When creating or editing an email campaign:
- Click Send Test Email button
- Enter your email address
- Click Send
- Check your inbox
Test emails send immediately and don't count toward your sending limits or stats.
Email Best Practices
Q: Why aren't my emails being delivered?
A: Common delivery issues:
Check these first:
- Verify your sender email in Dashboard > Organization > Email Settings
- Ensure you're on a paid plan (email sending restricted on free tier)
- Check your recipients haven't unsubscribed or marked as spam
- Verify your domain's email authentication (SPF, DKIM)
Improve deliverability:
- Use a verified sender email from your domain
- Don't send to purchased or scraped email lists
- Keep content professional and avoid spam trigger words
- Send consistently (not radio silence then bulk blasts)
- Monitor bounce rates and remove bad addresses
Q: Can I send emails from my own domain?
A: Yes, but you need to verify your domain first:
- Go to Dashboard > Organization > Email Settings
- Click Add Domain
- Add the required DNS records to your domain
- Wait for verification (typically 15-30 minutes)
- Select your domain as the sender email
Benefits of using your own domain:
- Better deliverability rates
- Professional appearance
- Builds trust with recipients
- Required for high-volume sending
