How to Mark a Field as Required
Learn how to mark form fields as required so customers must fill them in before submitting forms. Required fields ensure you collect essential information.
Before You Begin
- You must be logged in to your account at https://app.joinzipper.com
- You need permission to manage forms (typically organization owners and admins have this permission)
- A form created with fields to configure
Steps
Step 1: Navigate to Form
- Log in to your account at https://app.joinzipper.com/auth/login
- From the dashboard, click Forms in the left sidebar
- Find the form you want to configure
- Click on the form to open it
What happens next: You'll see the form editor.
Step 2: Edit Form
- On the form page, click Edit (or find edit option)
- The form editor will open
What happens next: You'll see form fields and editing options.
Step 3: Select Field to Configure
Find the field/question you want to mark as required:
- Browse form fields
- Click on the field to edit it
- Or find field editing options
Field editing:
- Field editor will open
- You can modify field properties
- Required option is available
Note: Select the specific field you want to mark as required.
Step 4: Enable Required Option
Find Required option:
- Look for Required checkbox or toggle
- This option marks the field as required
Enable Required:
- Check the Required checkbox
- Or toggle Required to On
- Field is now marked as required
Note: Enabling Required makes the field mandatory for form submission.
Step 5: Save Field
- Review your field configuration:
- Required option is enabled
- Field settings are correct
- Click Save (or save field)
- Field will be updated
- Required status will be saved
- You'll see a confirmation
What happens next: Field will be marked as required and:
- Customers must fill in this field
- Form can't be submitted without it
- Validation errors appear if field is empty
- Required indicator shows to customers
Step 6: Save Form
- After configuring all fields, save the form:
- Click Save on the form
- Form changes will be saved
- Required fields are configured
What happens next: Form will be saved with required fields configured.
How Required Fields Work
When a field is marked as required:
During form submission:
- Field must be filled in
- Form can't be submitted if field is empty
- Validation error appears if field is missing
Visual indicators:
- Required fields may show asterisk (*) or "Required" label
- Customers see which fields are required
- Clear indication of mandatory fields
Validation:
- System validates required fields
- Errors show if fields are empty
- Submission is blocked until all required fields are filled
Tips
- Mark essential fields as required (name, email, etc.)
- Don't mark too many fields as required (can reduce completion rates)
- Use required fields for critical information

Troubleshooting
Problem: I don't see the Required option Solution: Check that:
- You're editing the field (not just viewing)
- Required option is available for this field type
- Form editor is working correctly
