How Email Unsubscribe Links Work
All marketing emails sent through Zipper automatically include an unsubscribe link. This article explains how it works and answers common questions.
Automatic Unsubscribe Links
You don't need to add unsubscribe links manually. Every marketing email sent to real recipients automatically includes:
- An unsubscribe link in the email footer
- A tracking pixel for open rate analytics
This ensures compliance with email regulations like CAN-SPAM and GDPR.
Why Test Emails Don't Have Unsubscribe Links
When you send a test email to yourself, you'll notice the unsubscribe link is missing. This is intentional:
- No recipient record: Test emails aren't tied to a real recipient, so there's no subscription to manage
- No tracking pixel: Test emails also omit the tracking pixel since there's nothing to track
- Preview only: Test emails are meant to preview formatting and content, not test subscription features
Don't worry - when you send the real campaign, all recipients will receive the unsubscribe link automatically.
What Happens When Someone Unsubscribes
- Recipient clicks the unsubscribe link
- They're taken to a confirmation page
- Their email preferences are updated
- They'll no longer receive marketing emails from your organization
Unsubscribed contacts:
- Remain in your customer roster (not deleted)
- Can still receive transactional emails (receipts, confirmations, etc.)
- Can re-subscribe through the customer app if they change their mind
Where to See Unsubscribed Contacts
To view contacts who have unsubscribed:
- Go to CRM
- Filter by email subscription status
- View the list of unsubscribed contacts
Best Practices
- Never remove the footer section from email templates (it contains the unsubscribe link)
- Don't add unsubscribed contacts back to mailing lists without their consent
- Use segmentation to send relevant content and reduce unsubscribes
