How Email Subscribing and Unsubscribing Works
Zipper includes built-in email subscription management to help you stay compliant with email regulations and respect your customers' preferences. This article explains how subscribing and unsubscribing works for both you and your customers.
Overview
Email subscription management in Zipper has two main components:
- Automatic unsubscribe links in marketing emails
- Notification preferences customers can manage themselves
For Business Owners: How It Works
Automatic Unsubscribe Links
Every marketing email sent through Zipper automatically includes an Unsubscribe link at the bottom. You don't need to add this manually—it's included automatically to ensure compliance with email regulations like CAN-SPAM and GDPR.
When a recipient clicks the unsubscribe link:
- They're taken to a confirmation page that says "You have been unsubscribed from all emails"
- Their contact record is marked with an unsubscribe date
- They will no longer receive marketing emails from your organization
Viewing Unsubscribed Contacts
To see which contacts have unsubscribed:
- Log in at https://app.joinzipper.com/auth/login
- Go to Marketing > Contact Lists in the left sidebar
- Select a contact list
- Click the Unsubscribed contacts tab
You'll see a list of contacts who have unsubscribed, including the date they unsubscribed.
When Building Audiences for Campaigns
When you create an email campaign and select recipients:
- Unsubscribed contacts are automatically excluded
- You don't need to manually filter them out
- This ensures you only email people who want to hear from you
Tips
- Respect unsubscribes: Never manually re-add someone who has unsubscribed
- Monitor your unsubscribe rate: A high unsubscribe rate may indicate your emails aren't resonating with your audience
- Segment your lists: Send relevant content to specific groups rather than blasting everyone
- Set expectations: Let customers know what they'll receive when they sign up
Troubleshooting
Problem: A customer says they're still getting emails after unsubscribing
Solution: Check their contact record to confirm the unsubscribe was recorded. If they unsubscribed recently, any emails already scheduled may still be delivered. Verify they're unsubscribed from the specific list sending emails.
Problem: I accidentally removed someone from my contact list who wanted to stay subscribed
Solution: You can re-add them to your contact list. They'll need to confirm they want to receive emails again.
Problem: A customer wants to unsubscribe from marketing but keep receiving appointment reminders
Solution: Direct them to their notification preferences in their customer dashboard where they can customize exactly which notifications they receive.
